Nel loro donchisciottesco secondo lavoro in studio, Zolder Ellipsis (la band olandese-americana guidata dal tastierista/pianista Tom Aldrich) continua a tracciare un percorso non ortodosso attraverso i confini stilistici.
Mettendo in mostra generi e stili diversi da canzone a canzone e all’interno delle canzoni, “Il Libro dei Tropi” presenta un piccolo compendio di strumenti musicali attraverso lo spettro del rock e del jazz sperimentale/progressivo, incorporando al contempo altri idiomi marginali/popolari nella fase creativa/compositiva. 
Proprio come i compositori medievali usavano il “troping” per inserire le proprie voci nella musica sacra canonica, questi brani sono sia generici che nuovi. Nelle parole dell’American Heritage Dictionary, il troping è “l’uso di una parola o di un’espressione modificata dal significato originale a un altro”, vale a dire che stiamo mettendo tutte queste tecniche stilistiche in un nuovo contesto che dà loro una nuova… essenza?
Aggiungete a ciò l’idea che un tropo è essenzialmente simbolico e fantasioso (piuttosto che confinato nella sua forma esteriore), e otterrete l’intenzione: non solo esperimenti di genere, ma pezzi dall’atmosfera moderna che navigano in un paesaggio marino immaginario.
Questa volta, l’approccio musicale è più focalizzato sul piano compositivo, con la band che si muove attraverso complesse trame ritmiche e densi contrappunti strumentali.
Ma c’è ancora una buona dose dell’interazione spontanea della band e del caos improvvisativo che hanno contraddistinto l’album precedente, “Entropy Override”.
E in una nuova direzione,“Il Libro dei Tropi” presenta le prime collaborazioni del gruppo con la straordinaria scrittrice Eunsong Kim, i cui testi sono qui trasmessi dalla cantante/artista Esther Mugambi.

On their quixotic second studio effort,Zolder Ellipsis (the dutch-american band, led by the keyboardist/pianist Tom Aldrich) continues to chart an unorthodox course through stylistic borderlands. Showcasing different genres and styles from song to song and within songs, “Il Libro dei Tropi” (Book of Tropes) presents a little compendium of musical devices across the experimental/progressive rock and jazz spectrum, while incorporating other fringe/popular idioms along the way. 
Much as medieval composers would use “troping” to insert their own voices into the canonical church music, these pieces are both generic and novel. In the words of the American Heritage Dictionary, troping is “the use of a word or expression as changed from the original signification to another”—which is to say that we’re putting all these stylistic techniques in a new context that gives them a new… essence? Add to that the idea that a trope is essentially symbolic and imaginative (rather than confined by its outward form), and you get the intention: not just genre experiments, but modern mood pieces navigating an imaginal seascape.

This time out, the musical approach is more compositionally focused, with the band maneuvering through complex rhythmic textures and denseinstrumental counterpoints. But there is still a healthy dose of the spontaneous band interaction and improvisational mayhem that distinguished the previous album, “Entropy Override”.
And in a new direction, “Il Libro dei Tropi” features the group’s first collaborations with the remarkable writer Eunsong Kim, whose lyrics are conveyed here by vocalist/performance artist Esther Mugambi.
